Sint-Truiden have confirmed that former BVB Dortmund and Manchester United Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa is to undergo surgery and will be out of action until after the World Cup. The 33 year-old attacking midfielder has suffered a foot injury.

Kagawa joined the Canaries half way through last season on a free. So far this season he has made 12 appearances, scoring twice, including a goal directly from a corner.

Kagawas club teammate Daniel Schmidt has been called up to the Japanese national team squad for the upcoming 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Kagawa himself has played 97 times for the national team, scoring 31 goals in the process.

Sint-Truiden’s Japanese ownership means the club has had a history of bringing in Japanese players, from the J League and elsewhere in Europe. Shinji Okazaki joined the club in the summer, while they also have young midfielder Daiki Hashioka as well. Unfortunately, Hashioka did not make the final World Cup squad.
