World football’s law makers plan to retain the five substitutes per game rule into the 2020/21 campaign.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the impact that a packed schedule would have on squads already lacking match sharpness, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) agreed to allow teams to make five changes as opposed to the usual three.

And that rule is likely to remain for the 2020/21 season, according to The Athletic, who say that an official announcement is to be made in the coming days.

As with the previous implementation, each individual league can vote on the rule, with four Premier League clubs voting against the introduction in the first place.

However, the substitutes rule is not the only one that is up for discussion among the IFAB’s board of directors.

In particular, the offside law is set to come in for close examination as they are keen to reduce the extremely marginal calls based on the razor thin toe or heel position.

One thing that will not be up for debate at the moment is the introduction of a time limit for VAR decisions, with the IFAB believing that accuracy is more important than speed.
