Dallas have confirmed the permanent transfer of Luciano Acosta to Brazilian top-flight side Fluminense, drawing a close to the playmaker’s brief and underwhelming stint in Texas.
The 31-year-old Argentine arrived at Dallas in February as the reigning Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player, but will now continue his career in Brazil’s Série A.
The terms of the transfer remain undisclosed, although reports in Brazil suggest a fee of around $3 million was agreed between the clubs.
After forcing an exit from FC Cincinnati during the winter following a reported falling out with the club's hierarchy, Acosta joined Dallas as a marquee addition and was expected to become the creative heartbeat of the team.
In total, he made 21 appearances in MLS this season, scoring five goals and registering one assist.
