Currently on holiday in Greece, Marc-Andre ter Stegen is well aware of everything happening at Barcelona – including the signing of Joan Garcia. The 33-year-old captain’s future, as such, has become a topic of debate.
But his only plan is to return in top condition to the Ciutat Esportiva on 13 July when pre-season will begin. The Barça captain’s focus is fully on working to secure the starting goalkeeper role for the upcoming season. Hansi Flick, however, has a different view.
Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, so far no conversation has taken place between Flick and Ter Stegen with regard to the latter’s situation at Barcelona.
A discussion between the two is pending following the arrival of Garcia and the resulting changes to the goalkeeper hierarchy. However, Flick believes that certain standards in football must be upheld.
The coach does not want to interrupt Ter Stegen’s holiday and has decided not to call him – unlike former Poland manager Michał Probierz, who phoned Robert Lewandowski to inform him he was being stripped of the captaincy.
Lewandowski later made it clear he deserved a face-to-face conversation. That is precisely what Flick believes should happen with Ter Stegen, unless the goalkeeper feels the need to initiate contact himself.

So far, there is no indication of that, as the veteran German appears relaxed, actively sharing images on Instagram from Greece.
Three weeks remain until the reunion between the Barça head coach and his first-team captain. Flick will take all the time needed to explain the situation to a player who has just completed his eleventh season at the club.
Ter Stegen, who only featured against Real Valladolid and Villarreal after receiving medical clearance following an eight-month absence due to a full rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee, remains fully confident in his abilities.
Under contract until 2028, he has instructed his representatives not to listen to any offers. He does not believe Flick will exclude him from his plans and is convinced he will win the battle for the starting spot against Garcia.
Ter Stegen has no intention of leaving Barcelona and remains focused on being Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2026 World Cup.
