Flamengo’s real priority revealed ahead of Atlético Mineiro test

Flamengo are weighing a shift in priorities as they approach the Copa do Brasil last 16 clash with Atlético Mineiro, with club watchers believing domestic ambitions could take precedence over cup pursuits this season, according to UOL. Columnist Rodrigo Mattos argues that, in contrast to 2023 when Flamengo fielded their strongest lineup in the Copa do Brasil and subsequently lost ground in the league, this year’s strategy may put the Brasileiro first, relegating the cup to a secondary objective.

Despite this likely change in focus, a total overhaul of the starting eleven is not expected. Instead, some rotation will be implemented to manage workload amid a crowded fixture list and the arrivals of several high-profile signings.

Globo reports that Flamengo’s technical staff are working against tight registration deadlines to ensure their new reinforcements are eligible for the upcoming cup fixture. Right back Emerson Royal has already completed his move from Milan and is officially available for selection, having been registered in the CBF’s database on Tuesday. Midfielder Saúl remains in the process of completing the necessary paperwork, while fellow new arrivals Samuel Lino and Jorge Carrascal are racing to finalize international transfers in time for Thursday’s match against Atlético Mineiro at Maracanã.

While all four could technically make the squad should registration fall into place, manager Filipe Luís has urged caution regarding immediate expectations. Emerson Royal, returning from a lengthy absence with Milan, and Saúl, coming off several weeks of solo training after his spell at Sevilla, are both likely to require more time to reach full match fitness. Filipe remarked that Emerson is "more advanced" in his preparation thanks to recent preseason training, but expects both to be eased in with limited minutes at first.

The CBF’s registration window extends through early October, affording Flamengo the option to adjust their cup roster before potential semi-final appearances if progress is made. Nevertheless, the technical staff remain focused on accelerating the integration of new signings—reflecting the club’s wider ambition, even if the Copa do Brasil now plays a supporting role to the league.

With high-profile additions and a pragmatic eye on squad rotation, Flamengo’s strategy is evolving. The message from both pundits and those inside the club is clear: the league title takes priority this year, but the depth and quality in the squad should prevent any meaningful drop-off in the upcoming Copa do Brasil tie—no matter who starts.
