With an eye on expanding their brand in Asia, Flamengo have decided to play this weekend’s Fla-Flu derby with the players’ names in Mandarin on their shirts.

In addition, there will be a patch on their sleeve that recognises the year of the Ox.

Flamengo claim that over 700,000 of their social media followers come from Asia and want to include them as much as possible.

“We are working hard to establish our brand presence and generate new revenue in one of the most important markets for the future of football,” said Gustavo Oliveira, Vice President of Marketing and Communication at Flamengo.

“Our vision is to build a relationship with Chinese fans and companies that no other team in Latin America has, reinforcing the importance of the Flamengo brand in world football.”

The match is also going to be broadcast in China, while Flamengo will also launch several campaigns, including auctioning off the match-worn shirts, in order to make their impact as wide as possible.
