Flamengo endured a frustrating night on Sunday as Cuiabá recorded arguably the most memorable result their almost 20-year history.

Leaders Atlético Mineiro had suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Atlético Goianiense earlier, which offered Flamengo a golden opportunity to cut the gap between the sides at the top.

Michael looked to have opened the scoring inside the opening 10 minutes, but a VAR review correctly led to the effort being chalked off for Matheuzinho’s offside in the build up.

The Rubro-Negro dominated in terms of possession and territory. However Cuiabá defended resolutely throughout to deny the hosts many meaningful chances at the Maracanã.

Flamengo laid siege to the visitors’ penalty area in the closing stages, but were unable to prevent the Dourado (enjoying their first season in Brazil’s Série A) from securing a famous point.

The result moves the Mengão to within 10 points of Atlético Mineiro, with two games in hand.

Cuiabá sit in ninth, seven points above the relegation zone and looking increasingly likely to earn a second season in the top flight.
