Flamengo took another big step towards securing a spot in the top four places as they overcame Atlético Mineiro 1-0 at home on Saturday evening.
Scorers: Éverton 38′
A relatively uneventful first period, marked only by an injury to Hulk and a penalty appeal as Ayrton Lucas went down in the Atletico Mineiro box that was waved away, burst into life when the hosts took the lead with just over five minutes left to play.
Fabrício Bruno keeps the play alive and finds Éverton Soares with a perfect cross and the Brazilian winger plants his header into the ground and beyond Everson to break the deadlock.
Flamengo went into the break with the lead but were perhaps lucky to still be at full capacity as Metheus Franca was shown yellow, and not red, for his strong challenge in the 42nd minute.
The visitors pushed for an equaliser as the second half went on, dominating possession and finding more shooting opportunities though they struggled to test Aderbar Santos.
This win takes Doríval Junior’s side up in third place, one point above Corinthians whose game against Goiás has been postponed, as Atlético Mineiro remain in seventh.
