The player’s desire to remain in Europe is said to be the deciding factor, though the two sides were reportedly far apart over the price as well.

Benfica are believed to have wanted €20m for the 25-year-old, while Flamengo were only willing to offer €13m.

Flamengo are already moving on to other top South American prospects, most notably Uruguayan winger and LAFC sensation Diego Rossi, who is currently on loan at Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe.

The 23-year-old has two goals and five assists in 18 Süper Lig contests this season and is reportedly looking for a new club to showcase his best football.
