For some West Brom fans, this is a good thing, as Johnston's electric run during his loan spell in the latter half of the 2023/24 season will ring in their minds, and they'll hope that next season will allow him to recapture that.

For others, though, there'll be some disappointment that the club weren't able to make £5 million from a sale, which would represent a tidy profit on the £3 million they spent to bring him to the side from Celtic.

Whilst the 26-year-old hasn't publicly said whether he was looking forward to the move, you'd suspect that from the significant wage hike he was about to receive, and for the chance to play in Brazil, the Irishman probably had some frustrations that he wasn't able to complete the switch.

Mikey Johnston would have almost doubled his wage at Flamengo

According to Vene Casagrande on X, Mikey Johnston would have earned 8.4 million Brazilian Real per year, which equates to £21,600 per week, whilst at Flamengo.

So, a move to the side currently top of the Brazilian Serie A would have seen a huge improvement on the wage he earned whilst playing at West Brom. From a pure monetary point of view, it must frustrate Johnston that the deal collapsed.

The Irishman was set to sign a four-year deal at Flamengo, with a flight booked set to land in Rio de Janeiro at 5am on July 8, but a late medical and performance issues arose, and the deal was cancelled at the last minute.

Johnston now remains at West Brom, frustrated and with his future up in the air.

Mikey Johnston's future at West Brom is still undecided

After a sub-par season at West Brom, which saw the 26-year-old score just three times and add another five assists in 40 games, it's still to be seen whether the Baggies may look to move Mikey Johnston.

Profit and sustainability rulings will almost dictate how West Brom go about their business this summer, and having seen that the Irishman can garner a transfer fee of £5 million, perhaps the higher-ups at the Hawthorns will be hoping a similar offer comes in.

If the Baggies can earn a profit on a player who disappointed during large parts of the 2024/25 campaign, then that would be seen as a great bit of business during a window where West Brom will be desperate not to sell the likes of Tom Fellows to stay on the right side of PSR.

However, there could be a possibility that Johnston could find the form he showed during his loan the season prior, where he netted seven in 18 games to help the side to a play-off spot.

Johnston's future is truly up in the air, and whilst Baggies fans would be hopeful he could improve going into next season, a sale wouldn't rub too many of them the wrong way either.

Either way, the 26-year-old likely won't be signing a contract as large as he was expecting at Flamengo this summer.
