Five Things We Learned From Inter Milan This Week: “Better If Skriniar Had Left Immediately”

Could we be seeing Inter descend into anarchy?

Just 18 months on from the Scudetto win that should’ve signaled a period of dominance and progression for the club after a mere decade in the doldrums, Inter may be heading back to obscurity.

Whilst they experienced a good win on the field this week, it is what is going on off it that is of great concern.

Here’s what we learned from Inter this week.

1) Would Have Been Best If Skriniar Left Immediately

Sure it leaves a humongous hole in Inter’s back line as well as a hole in the hearts of Inter fans but it’s best this saga is ended as fast as possible.

It appears the Slovakian won’t be hanging around for next term so it makes sense to halt the rather embarrassing media facade the whole debacle is turning into and Inter make some cash on him.

It is very frustrating to see things end like this for a player who should well be a future club icon but thanks to Inter’s shoddy finances, the end of the road appears nigh for Inter and Skriniar.

2) Inter Must Avoid Koulibaly Move Like The Plague

The likes of Merih Demiral, Rodrigo Becao and Kalidou Koulibaly have been linked as possible replacements for the outgoing Skriniar but this is a decision that Inter must not rush.

Demiral looks a complicated deal to make, Becao would be hugely underwhelming and whilst Koulibaly has been a great player, a move for a player such as the Senegalese international is a mistake that Inter need to stop making.

From Gabriel Batistuta to Radja Nainggolan even to Diego Godin, Inter historically have a problem with signing 30 something greats who have had their day so for that reason, Koulibaly should be a no go.

Unless it’s him or Harry Maguire. Yuck.

3) The Future Of Samir Handanovic Still Not Resolved?

With Andre Onana now rightly taking the gloves as Inter’s first choice stopper, the question begs of the future of long time custodian and club captain Samir Handanovic.

The Slovenian stopper has been with Inter over a decade and regardless of the fact his form has dropped off a cliff post Scudetto, he should be treated with dignity in his final months.

A departure would work should Samir still have ambitions of playing weekly but a new deal to play understudy to Onana would work out well for Inter should it be on reduced terms.

An interesting one for sure but a situation that must be handled with care to show respect for a club hero.

4) Joaquin Correa Must Leave In The Summer

If anyone wants him, Joaquin Correa should be sold in the summer.

One of Inter’s biggest wasted purchases of recent years, the Argentina international would surely offer more given a change of surroundings.

Sloppy in possession, lacking off the ball presence and also lacking in any real cutting edge, it is best for all parties if in the summer or even in the remaining days of this window, Inter generate cash from a sale of Correa.

It would be great to see Correa prove the doubters wrong but one feels that he’s had plenty of opportunities to do so and has failed.

5) Denzel Dumfries On The Market?

Rather ludicrously, Raoul Bellanova got the nod over Denzel Dumfries in the car crash defeat to Empoli last week, leading to the suggestion that the Dutchman may well be on the market.

With it seemingly being the case that Inter need to generate funds and after a productive World Cup, the former PSV man has seen himself linked with moves to the Premier League.

Whilst following Achraf Hakimi was going to be a fairly impossible job, it’s fair to say that Dumfries has certainly not disgraced himself in Inter colours.

That being said it is sad state of affairs to see this great club looking at selling its saleable assets rather than trying to build a squad around them.

Frightening times lie ahead over the next few months. Let us hope Simone can bring Inter Champion’s League football or the sacrifices might be severe.
