With football not around to fill our free time at the moment, we need something to plug the gap and satisfy that craving.

Up steps Football Manager 2020. A game so addictive it has been the reason for divorces and failed exams.

But now you are actively encouraged to get lost in the world of football management, and to help you along the way, here are our pointers on who start a new save with.

1.FSV Mainz

The Bundesliga is a wonderful place to start your FM career, with generous prize money and talent littered around the league.

There are a few teams who will be fun to embark on a save with, the likes of Köln, Bayer Leverkusen and Union Berlin all appealing. However, we’ve gone for Mainz.

In Robin Quaison, Jean-Paul Boëtius and Jean-Philippe Mateta they have a frightening front three who all hold at least four star potential, with their best years ahead of them.

With patches of quality in their youth ranks as well, Mainz will be lots of fun.

Real Sociedad

Challenging Barcelona and Real Madrid for the LaLiga title makes for a fulfilling and long game.

This year, there isn’t a better team to face this challenge with than Real Sociedad.

With Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Merino, Adnan Januzaj, Alexander Isak and Mikel Oyarzabal – Sociedad have an exciting squad full of young talent that you can work all sorts of magic with.

Atalanta

It’s gone under the radar that Atalanta qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals before football was suspended.

Can you replicate the success that Gian Piero Gasperini has had on Football Manager? There is a lot you can do with Papu Gomez, Josip Iličić and Duvan Zapata.

Atalanta’s youth academy has produced bags of talent in recent years, with the likes of Franck Kessie, Mattia Caldara, Roberto Gagliardini and Andrea Conti all coming through the ranks.

There is still work to do to take the club to the top of Serie A but with the current squad and the burgeoning youth talent, you’re well equipped to give Juventus a run for their money.

Lille

PSG are dominating French football in real life and tend to do so on Football Manager.

It won’t be easy to topple Neymar, Mbappé and co but LOSC Lille are the most appealing team to take on this challenge with.

Lille don’t have the riches of the club from the French capital but they benefit from already having a number of exciting prospects in their roster.

Boubakary Soumaré, Jonathan Bamba, Jonathan Ikoné and Victor Oshimen all potential of 4.5 stars and above. If you can keep hold of them, there is a potential Champions League winnning side there already.

For an added bonus, former Swansea hero Renato Sanches is plying his trade at the club!

Burnley

We debated not suggesting going for a Premier League save as the money that comes in makes it easy to win the league within a few seasons.

However, you will have your work cut out with Burnley, which makes it an appealing prospect.

The club have no debts which leaves a solid foundation to build on but the squad will take a lot of work to be able to compete domestically and in Europe.

Dwight McNeil and Josh Brownhill are diamonds in the rough who provide a great base to mould your team around.
