The 2019/20 Premier League season is now four games old, with a host of the division’s leading lights having begun the new campaign in fine form.

Unsurprisingly, the likes of Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Mohamed Salah have earned plaudits for their displays so far, each staking their claim for the Golden Boot after prolific starts in front of goal.

Elsewhere, several surprise packages have also made impressive starts to the new campaign and we’ve decided to look at five of the best.

Here are five Premier League players who have made surprisingly good starts to the season…

Daniel James

Many were surprised by Manchester United’s decision to pluck the Welsh international from Championship side Swansea City during the summer, though the 21-year-old has adapted seamlessly to life in the top flight.

The winger’s electric pace has brought a new dimension to the Manchester United attack, whilst he has shown his ability to score goals at Premier League level with three in his first four appearances for his new club to be named as United’s Player of the Month.

More goals for Wales during the recent international break highlighted his ever-increasing confidence, and the youngster will be hoping to continue his flying start to life at Old Trafford over the course of the season.

Caglar Soyuncu

Leicester fans may have feared the worst following Harry Maguire’s £80m world-record defection to Manchester United, fears which may have increased with Brendan Rodgers’ decision not to sign a replacement for the England international.

Those fans have been forgotten somewhat following the performances of Turkish centre-back Soyuncu, who has stepped into the considerable void left by Maguire admirably.

A whole-hearted defender, the 23-year-old has quickly become a cult hero at the King Power Stadium after a series of commanding displays. Leicester have begun the new season impressively and currently sit third in the Premier League after four games, Sonyuncu has been central to their success.

Teemu Pukki

The Finnish forward fired Norwich to the Championship title last season, being named as the division’s Player of the Year following his 29 league goals. The 29-year-old has begun life in the Premier League in similar fashion, scoring five goals in four games during August to be named as Player of the Month.

That haul included a superb hat-trick against Newcastle to earn Norwich’s first win since returning to the top flight, whilst his evasive movement and cool finishing seem ideally suited to the highest level.

Norwich currently occupy a position in the relegation places after losing three of their opening four games, and will be hoping Pukki can continue to fire as they bid to secure their top-flight status.

Bjorn Engels

Newly-promoted Aston Villa were amongst the Premier League’s biggest spenders this summer, splashing out over £130m on 12 new signings as Dean Smith bolstered his squad for their return to the top flight.

Amongst the most unheralded of those signings was Belgian defender Engels, who arrived in a fairly low-profile €8m deal from French side Reims. A relative unknown, Engels has quickly won the admiration of the Villa supporters with an impressive start to life in the Premier League, sparking talk of a call-up to the senior Belgium side.

Tammy Abraham

Chelsea’s transfer-ban has led to opportunities for several of the club’s best young talent, with forward Abraham, in particular, seizing the opportunity handed to him at Stamford Bridge. The 21-year-old returned to Chelsea this summer after a prolific loan spell in the Championship at Aston Villa last season, firing Dean Smith’s side to promotion to the Premier League.

New manager Frank Lampard has placed his faith in the youngster ahead of the more experienced duo of Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi, and after a difficult start which saw him receive racist abuse after missing the decisive spot-kick in the UEFA Super Cup defeat to Liverpool, Abraham has responded with four goals in two Premier League games.

Perhaps unlucky to have missed out on Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the recent Euro 2020 qualifiers, Abraham has averaged a goal every 63 minutes in the Premier League so far this season.

Few would have expected Abraham to be Lampard’s immediate first-choice, but his performances in recent weeks have vindicated his manager’s trust.
