It has been a tough start to life under Vincent Kompany for Mathys Tel. He has accumulated just 224 minutes across all competitions this season, and has yet to open his goalscoring account in seven appearances.
As a result, there has been growing speculation over a loan move in January. With it, let’s take a look at five possible destinations – with a team from each of the top five leagues.
Brighton have made a great start to life under former St. Pauli head coach Fabian Hürzeler, and currently sit in 6th place in the Premier League, fresh off a seriously impressive win over Manchester City. This could be a seriously attractive option for Tel.
The Seagulls have created 34 big chances in their 11 league games so far, and like to play on the front foot as much as possible, regardless of their opponent. Hürzeler is currently using a 442 formation, which could really suit Tel. When the teenager plays out wide, you do sometimes think he isn’t close enough to goal, but he also doesn’t feel like a lone striker at the moment either.
As a result, playing in a front two could be the perfect hybrid. Veteran Danny Welbeck’s hold up and link up play is a big part of Brighton’s style, and could be the perfect foil for Tel to play off of in a front two.
The only concern here would be game time. He would get more minutes than he does at Bayern, but would it be sufficient enough? Brighton have some strong options up front. Joao Pedro has just come back from injury, and Georginio Rutter has looked good in spells too. There is also Evan Ferguson and Julio Enciso, as well as Germany youngster Brajan Gruda.
