Fiorentina Wondering Whether to Retain Gudmundsson

Fiorentina won the Albert Gudmundsson sweepstakes last summer, besting especially Inter, but the attacker has had a rough season, not performing at the same level as in his Genoa days and missing extended time due to injury.

After nursing thigh and calf strains earlier on and struggling to return to peak shape afterward, the Icelandic attacker suffered a coccyx fracture in his recent cameo versus Como. He’ll be out for 30 to 45 days, PrimoCanale reports.

Gudmundsson has scored 5 goals in 18 matches, adding an assist, with Fiorentina so far. The team is mulling whether to pull the trigger on their option to buy. The Viola signed him on an initial loan also because he was dealing with some legal troubles at the time. He has been cleared at this stage, pending a possible appeal.

The Gigliati disbursed €6M last summer and would have to add about €20M to purchase him, plus €3M potential add-ons. The 27-year-old had reached the double-digit threshold twice in a row at Genoa, providing plenty of helpers.

Our Take on Fiorentina and Gudmundsson

He has had a hellish season injury-wise and never got into a rhythm, which is a very unfortunate and unforeseen turn of events since he had been very durable. They have a lot of players on loan and probably won’t keep them all unless they are planning another major sale. This kind of deal is a double-edged sword as, while it gives sides time to evaluate, the money they spent last summer would be wasted if they didn’t retain him. A renegotiation of the terms could be the way to go.
