Former Inter forward Luis Figo is one of several high-profile football figures to slam the decision not to award the 2024 Ballon d’Or to Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr.
Figo, who won the award himself in the year 2000 while at Real Madrid, said that the Ballon d’Or “was a prestigious award, until today,” while on the red carpet at the ceremony in Paris on Monday evening.
Multiple reports in the build-up to the event claimed that Vinicius Jr. was the nailed-on favourite to take home the main award, however, reports on the day claimed that the final award will in fact go to Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri instead.
As a result, Real Madrid have reportedly decided to boycott the awards, which means that there will also be no Jude Bellingham or Dani Carvajal, both of whom have placed in the top 10. Carlo Ancelotti, nominated for Coach of the Year, is also not expected to attend, nor is club President Florentino Perez.
