Nigeria booked their FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup quarter-final berth with a game to spare, while Japan are close to joining them.

Esther Onyenezide’s breakthrough in the 83rd minute saw Nigeria edge South Korea in Group C and reach the last eight.

Canada cannot progress after a 3-1 loss to France, Magnaba Folquet and a double by Esther Mbakem-Niaro proving decisive, before Olivia Smith’s consolation.

Maika Amano converted two penalties in the last third of the match, for a 2-0 Japan win over Ghana and a quarter-final place.

The Netherlands sent the USA to a 3-0 defeat to edge above them in Group D, Sanne Koopman, Dana Foederer and a Marit Auée penalty doing the damage.

The last round of group stage games are on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
