FIFA have decided to extend the current temporary measures regarding the contracts of players in a war zone, Voetbal International reports. This means that players under contract in Ukraine or Russia can have their contract suspended again which is good news for Feyenoord.

Due to the war situation between Russia and Ukraine, players were able to have their contracts suspended last season, allowing them to temporarily start at another club. After consultations between FIFA, UEFA, ECA and FIFPRO, among others, it has been decided to extend the temporary regulations. This means that in exceptional situations, such as a war situation, players have the right to unilaterally suspend their employment contracts.

For Feyenoord, this can turn out positively for the Eredivisie champions. Due to these regulations, they were able to temporarily take over Sebastian Szymanski from Dinamo Moscow. Arne Slot’s side hope to be able to keep the 24-year-old midfielder on board next season, but the buyout may have been an obstacle. Due to FIFA’s decision, it will also be possible to rent him under equal conditions next season.

“FIFA will continue to closely monitor the situation in Ukraine and Russia and will ensure that the regulatory framework is adjusted where necessary,” FIFA said in an official statement.

In addition, the regulations have been slightly amended, so that suspended players cannot abuse these rules, and the rules on training allowances have been slightly nuanced.
