The 2030 FIFA World Cup is set to be held across three continents and six countries.
In a statement released on Wednesday, FIFA confirmed news broken by CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez that the 2030 World Cup will kick off in South America.
The remainder of the tournament will then be played in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. It is the first time the FIFA World Cup will be played across six countries.
“In 2030, we will have a unique global footprint, three continents – Africa, Europe and South America – six countries – Argentina, Morocco, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay – welcoming and uniting the world while celebrating together the beautiful game, the centenary and the FIFA World Cup,” Gianni Infantino said.
The tournament will kick off in South America, with Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay playing at home before they and their opponents travel to Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
All six host nations will qualify automatically for the tournament. The first-ever FIFA World Cup occurred in Uruguay in 1930, with the hosts claiming the game’s most coveted trophy in its inaugural form.
The hosts for the 2034 tournament will then come from the AFC or OFC, with Saudi Arabia said to be in the running.
