Fernando Torres has endorsed Xabi Alonso amid rumours linking him with the Liverpool job this summer, labelling him "one of the best managers in the world".

Torres returned to Anfield last weekend to take part in the LFC Legends' 4-2 charity match victory over Ajax Legends, with the former Liverpool striker netting in front of the Kop late in the game.

The Spaniard was met with great fanfare despite his disappointing Liverpool exit in 2011 and was able to play alongside a number of former teammates from his time on Merseyside, including the likes of Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt.

However, one of his old colleagues Xabi Alonso wasn't in attendance, with the Bayer Leverkusen boss having been consistently linked with succeeding Klopp this summer.

Alonso's side are top of the Bundesliga table by ten points and unbeaten in all competitions this season, with Bayern Munich also interested in hiring the 42-year-old come the end of the season.

Torres may not have been able to reunite with his compatriot last Saturday, but he did offer a glowing recommendation of the exciting Spanish coach.

FERNANDO TORRES HEAPS PRAISE ON XABI ALONSO

Speaking about the Leverkusen boss, Torres said (via Liverpool Echo): "I think he’s doing great, fantastic player and he is already a fantastic manager.

"He’s a really nice guy, I’ve got a nice friendship with him and I hope for him all the best. We have seen in the Sociedad academy he is doing really good things, now you can see he has become one of the best managers in the world.

"He’s having a fantastic season, not losing a single game and the future is bright for him."

Torres has taken his first steps in management as well, with the former Liverpool sharpshooter currently working as head coach for Atletico Madrid's U19 team.

The 40-year-old is doing a sterling job in the Spanish capital, but believes he has an awful long way to go in his managerial career.

Asked about coaching Liverpool himself one day, Torres replied: "This is a big thing, I am just starting, learning and understanding how different it is to be a coach – it’s a completely different thing.

"Starting from zero, doing the right step – one at a time – I’m trying to be a coach, let’s see if I can do it. But coaching for Liverpool is a different thing, step-by-step."
