Fenerbahçe SK: José Mourinho shown the door
Thunderstruck in Turkey! Fenerbahçe SK has just announced the sacking of José Mourinho. The Portuguese tactician pays the price for the club’s Champions League play-off exit, as well as his recent outspoken comments about the club’s management.
The Istanbul club released a statement this Friday, August 29, 2025, to announce a change at the helm: “We are parting ways with José Mourinho, head coach of our professional A team since the 2024-2025 season. We thank him for his commitment and wish him much success in his career,” the club posted on its official X account.
Behind this decision are the Special One’s comments when questioned by a journalist about remarks made by the club’s vice-president, Hamdi Akin, who had predicted an easy match against Benfica and a guaranteed qualification.
“Believe it or not, but I don’t know who he is. Therefore, I am not aware of his statements about the difficulty of the upcoming match or about how hard it would be to score,” said the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss, before adding: “I don’t know this person, and I don’t know his influence or importance within the club’s structure. He’s never been introduced to me, I simply don’t know who he is. Sometimes, I get confused with names. But here, I just don’t know who he is.”
A statement that certainly didn’t go down well, especially as Fenerbahçe SK crashed out against Benfica (0-0, 0-1) and will have to settle for playing in the Europa League this season.
