The UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 finally gets underway on Wednesday evening when tournament hosts England face Austria at a sold-out Old Trafford.

Hopes are high for England success with the Lionesses having enjoyed a fabulous run of results since new head coach Sarina Wiegman took over last September.

The Lionesses’ first opponents in Group A, Austria, were surprise UEFA Women’s EURO semi-finalists back in 2017 and while England are the hot favourites to win the game, they will have to express some caution.

Ahead of the match, FAWSL Full-Time have taken a look at the match facts provided by UEFA and here are three interesting points to note.

England aiming to become third host nation to win UEFA Women’s EURO since 1997

England begin their UEFA Women’s EURO campaign aiming to become the third nation to win the tournament in front of their own fans since the group stage was introduced in 1997. Germany won the tournament on home soil back in 2001 during their long period of dominance while 2017 hosts, The Netherlands, were also successful on their own turf under the guidance of current England head coach Wiegman.

Austria have a long losing record against the Lionesses

Austria have lost all seven of their previous meetings against opening day opponents England. The nation have scored just one goal and have conceded 22 against the Lionesses. England have kept a clean sheet in each of the last six encounters, a run which dates back to a 4-1 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying victory in Amstetten in September 2005.

Windy Wearside hosted last England-Austria encounter in November

The most recent fixture between the two teams came in November last year. Ellen White scored England’s goal in a 1-0 victory over Austria at a wind-swept Stadium of Light in Sunderland in FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 qualifying. The two sides will meet in the reverse fixture in September with England simply needing a positive result to qualify.

The opening fixture of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 between England and Austria is scheduled to kick-off at 8pm on Wednesday evening.
