The Manchester derby kicked off a jam-packed weekend of FA Women’s Super League action and we had five more entertaining fixtures to look forward to on Sunday.
Here’s what went down.
Scorers: McCabe 33’, Wubben-Moy 41’, Maanum 86′.
Arsenal made it five wins out of five as they strengthened their grip on the top of the Super League table.
Katie McCabe gave the Gunners the lead with a looping, left-footed finish after Everton had failed to clear a corner before Lotte Wubben-Moy headed in from another corner after a mix-up at the back double the advantage.
Frida Maanum wrapped up a comfortable afternoon for the hosts with a stunning strike from 25-yards out after taking the shot on the bounce.
Arsenal move three points clear of Chelsea and Tottenham at the top of the table.
Scorers: Walker 54′; Quinn 66′.
Birmingham City earned their first point of the campaign after a frustrating a West Ham side unable to build on their win over Manchester City last weekend.
Claudia Walker gave the Hammers against her former club with a thunderous drive at the start of the second half.
But the visitors equalised 12 minutes later, with Louise Quinn free to tap home from a yard out after a scramble from a corner.
The point moves Birmingham off bottom while West Ham move up to sixth.
Scorers: Geum-min 37′, Williams 86′; Graham 87′.
Tottenham Hotspur lost their 100% start to the season after suffering their first defeat of the campaign to Brighton and Hove Albion.
Lee Geum-min rounded off an impressive first-half performance for the Seagulls, slotting into the bottom corner after reacting first to a rebounded effort.
Matters were made worse for Spurs when Rachel Williams was sent off for a second yellow card after a reckless challenge on Felicity Gibbons.
Brighton seemingly put the game beyond any doubt when Victoria Williams bundled home a second goal from a corner but Kit Graham responded immediately for the depleted visitors with a cool finish from the edge of the area.
But Brighton held out to move up to fifth in the league while Spurs drop to third.
Scorers: Eikeland 16′, Rowe 19′, Dowie 45+3′.
Reading had waited all season to score their first goal of the campaign, and three came along at once as they clocked up their first three points of 2021/22.
Amalie Eikeland got the Royals off the mark with a cross-cum-shot which looped over Hannah Hampton into the back of the net before Rachel Rowe’s powerful effort made it two moments later.
Natasha Dowie then capped off the perfect first half performance with a ferocious strike when played through on goal.
Alisha Lehmann clipped the outside of the post as Villa searched for a way back into the game but the visitors never looked like threatening their dominant hosts this afternoon.
Scorers: Harder 82′, Kirby 90+4
Champions Chelsea had late goals from Pernille Harder and Fran Kirby to thank as they struggled to overcome a stubborn Leicester City side.
Foxes goalkeeper Kirstie Levell was in inspired form to keep out the hosts, making seven saves before Harder saved the day in the 82nd minute.
Chelsea worked a short corner for Jessie Fleming to cut the ball back for the Danish striker to slot the ball into the bottom corner before Kirby added a second in the last minute of stoppage time as Kirsty Hayes’ side move back above Manchester United into third place.
