Gameweek five sees Newcastle take on Leeds at St James’ Park on Friday evening, whilst Sunday’s action includes two huge clashes in the capital as West Ham host Manchester United and Tottenham face Chelsea.

Here are four of the best captaincy options ahead of gameweek five in Fantasy Premier League.

Mohamed Salah v Crystal Palace (H)

Mohamed Salah looks like the leading captaincy option ahead of FPL gameweek five, with the Liverpool star always difficult to overlook when on home soil at Anfield.

Salah scored at Leeds last time out and also netted against AC Milan in the Champions League in midweek, the Egyptian having returned three goals and two assists from four FPL fixtures so far this season.

The 29-year-old also boasts a fine record against this weekend’s opponents, Crystal Palace, including producing two goals and an assist as part of a 33-minute cameo as a substitute at Selhurst Park last season.

His overall record is even more impressive against the Eagles, failing to blank in any home fixture he has started against Palace and returning three goals and five assists from five career starts against the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo v Manchester United (A)

Cristiano Ronaldo is back in the Premier League and set to feature often in this feature throughout the season, the Manchester United man announcing his return in inevitable fashion with a brace against Newcastle last weekend.

Ronaldo also scored during the Red Devils’ disappointing defeat at Young Boys in midweek and is primed for another performance as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s travel to face West Ham on Sunday.

The Hammers were poor during a goalless draw at Southampton last time out and had Thursday night commitments in the Europa League, whilst David Moyes will also be without the services of talisman Michail Antonio following his red card at St Mary’s.

Despite featuring just once this season, Ronaldo has taken six shots and recorded the joint-most big chances in the division, the forward set to take another shoot-on-sight approach to the London Stadium this weekend.

Kevin De Bruyne v Southampton (H)

For the first time this season, Kevin De Bruyne heads into an FPL gameweek as a viable option for the captaincy.

The Manchester City midfielder made his first start of the season against RB Leipzig in midweek and was at the centre of a fine attacking performance from Pep Guardiola’s side, showing little signs of rust and creating the second goal with a trademark delivery from the right channel.

Only one team conceded more big chances in away fixtures than Southampton last season and De Bruyne could find joy against the Saints this weekend, his creative stats the best in the division last season.

No player bettered the Belgian for assists, shot-creating actions, or goal-creating actions per 90 minutes in the Premier League in 2021/22 and his return is a major boost for a free-scoring City side with 17 goals across their past four fixtures in all competitions.

Patrick Bamford v Newcastle (A)

Patrick Bamford (£7.9m) is set to attract FPL interest this week in the absence of Michail Antonio (suspended) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (injured).

Bamford and Leeds travel to face a Newcastle side struggling so far this season, the Magpies winless after four fixtures with just a single point.

Friday’s clash at St James’ Park promises goals with both teams boasting poor defensive stats this season and Leeds will, as always, attack at will under Marcelo Bielsa.

Bamford and Leeds have not quite repeated last season’s performances so far this season, but the newly-capped England international has returned twice in four fixtures and can improve on that record against a Newcastle side in dismal form.
