Fans split on Goldson as Rangers deal on Souttar

With reports today that Connor Goldson is on the verge of a pre-contract with either West Brom or Nottingham, Rangers fans find themselves in a bit of a quandary.

Reverse to earlier this morning, when news emerged that Hearts wanted around £600,000 for John Souttar; fan reaction was discouraged at best, and decided he wasn’t worth paying that. ‘Give them nothing’ the fans suggested, and it was rather left at that.

News then broke some hours later of Goldson’s seeming present state of opting to move back south, presently on a pre-contract, and the opinion somewhat changed:

‘Sell him now and use the cash on Souttar’ seemed to be the new resounding opinion from the readers, and in truth we don’t fault the logic there.

We just weren’t as bothered as most by the idea of paying just over half a million for a Scotland CB when our own defensive issues are stark and well-documented.

As for Goldson? In truth, it’s a strange one in many respects – he’s honoured the four years of his contract, carrying himself well enough, and while his deal negotiations were messy at best, and he never appeared interested in signing, well, it’s not like he’s not given us anything. He was stellar last season, and he’s hardly been bad value for £3M.

And he may have simply decided in his head that it’s time to go home.

But while there’s a strong chunk of fans who rate him highly (we’re somewhere in the middle) the majority appear happy to see the back of him, fairly or not.

End of the day, what will be, will be, and if we do sell Goldson now it’ll be a little bit of cash we can use on Souttar.

Either way, we’d be shocked if we end 2022 with him still in the side.
