The Netherlands announced relaxed COVID-19 restrictions on Tuesday which see fans return to football stadiums for the first time since November.

As confirmed during Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s press conference, clubs will now be allowed to have fans fill one-third of their stadium starting Wednesday and games must end by 10 p.m.

However, prior to the government’s official announcement, representatives from 34 professional clubs including Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, and Feyenoord plus the KNVB football association, shared their disappointment with the decision.

“It is a proposal without perspective. It cannot be explained to the supporters, it only increases unrest among the supporters and, moreover, it costs the clubs hands full of money again,” read a statement published Tuesday morning.

“We are constructive and want to think along in solutions. It is only acceptable to us to start with one-third if we can switch to at least two-thirds occupancy from February 4.

“We can organize this safely and responsibly, with everything that goes with it, and quickly work towards full stadiums from there.”

It remains to be seen whether or not the government will adjust to the request from the clubs.
