Holidays can start after 1-1

We had a brisk and entertaining end-of-season encounter to finish the campaign with. A draw at Austria Vienna allowed us to see out the season with an astonishing 30-match unbeaten run.

Match summary

The opening 20 minutes were to be filed firmly in the category of leisurely end of season encounter - with expected-goals scores of 0.08 to 0.00 plus a total of three touches of the ball in opposition penalty areas. The game would open up - especially when Junior Adamu raced past Martins and was fouled on the byline. Sekou Koita stepped up to take the penalty and sent Früchtl the wrong way (30').

The hosts increasingly got into the game as it went on - with Austria Vienna trickster Jukic hitting the side netting before Philipp Köhn saved after some penalty box pinball. Koita headed over and Martins underhit a headed chance as we ended the first half on top.

The opening of the second half was as similarly devoid of chances as the first had been. There were no notable efforts for 23 minutes before Nici Seiwald sprung onto the scene - but Früchtl saved well. As the game went on, news sank in that Austria Klagenfurt were beating Rapid Vienna, and that a win for Austria Vienna would see them leap to fourth.

Space for our creative forces became opened up by the hosts' intent though. Amar Dedic hit the ball to Maurits Kjaergaard, who cut into the middle – where substitute Karim Konate slotted in (75''). The Ivorian had been standing offside, however, and the goal was ruled out after a VAR check. The hosts then finally mounted some real pressure. Köhn let a corner slip through his hands - having been subject to some questionable manhandling in the six-yard box - and Martins blocked his own team-mate, Tabakovic, on the goal line. Gruber then missed a big chance and was denied by Köhn moments later.

Austria weren't finished there though. A chip into a penalty area was cut by Tabakovic to Gruber, who beat Solet and  drilled in (90'). That made for a nervy end with Köhn pulling off a sensational stop against Tabakovic plus Dovedan missing a big opportunity. Our Red Bulls remained unbeaten though – a great note on which to begin a well-deserved holiday for the champions.

Austria Vienna still had a lot to play for, relatively, and they put everything into it. We would have preferred to win, but ultimately we are unbeaten since the second match of the season - that speaks for itself. We had an incredible time this season, I think I can only start to fully appreciate that now. I will always look back on it fondly.
