Chelsea defender Aniek Nouwen says that The Netherlands’ failure to capitalise on their good moments cost them against France in their UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 quarter-final.

After a goalless 90 minutes in Rotherham, Mark Parsons’ side lost 1-0 in extra-time with French full-back Ève Périsset scoring from the penalty spot.

France were the dominant side throughout the match, although The Netherlands did have some big chances of their own. Speaking to the media after the match, defender Nouwen said that it was the Dutch’s inability to capitalise on their good moments that ultimately cost them.

“I think we had some good moments but we didn’t make enough of those opportunities,” Nouwen said. “I don’t think we had enough depth in our play

“Mark (Parsons) just told us to give everything we had to keeping searching for one big chance which could bring the goal but it wasn’t to be.”

Nouwen will now have a few days of rest before returning to Chelsea for pre-season training. She is expecting a chat with manager Emma Hayes before turning her focus towards pursuing her next piece of silverware.

She said “I’ve spoken with Emma (Hayes) a little bit (during the tournament) but she has just let me go and concentrate on my football. I expect to hear from her in the coming days.

“The challenge for the next trophy or tournament is coming. It is just about picking yourself up and going again.”

The Netherlands’ exit from this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO means that there will be new champions in a week’s time.
