Leeds United had shown an interest in signing Bournemouth’s Chris Mepham, but the defender will remain with the Premier League side beyond the January transfer window.
The Welsh international has only made six appearances for the Cherries in the league this season, so there had been talk that he could move on before the deadline later this week.
that Leeds were keen to do a deal for Mepham, as Daniel Farke looks to add more depth to his defence.
However, in a fresh update, journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Bournemouth have made it clear to the Whites that Mepham will not be on the move as he remains part of Andoni Iraola’s plans.
“Bournemouth have turned down two approaches from Leeds and Sheffield United for Chris Mepham. Both clubs enquired but Bournemouth have rejected as he’s important for them in the final run in and will not leave the club.”
There had been doubts over the future of Charlie Cresswell, so you can understand why Leeds were in the market for a new centre-back.
But, if the academy graduate remains at the club, then they should have enough to get through for the remainder of the campaign, with Joe Rodon, Liam Cooper and Pascal Struijk also options for Farke. Plus, Ethan Ampadu has shown in recent weeks that he is capable of doing a job if necessary.
So, whilst it’s a blow that they weren’t able to bring in a player like Mepham, as he would be a good operator at this level, the reality is that it’s not a position that needs urgently addressing.
For many fans, a full-back should be the priority, and there will be some who feel that an attacking midfielder would also improve the group as Leeds chase a top two spot this season.
With his lack of game time, you can’t imagine Mepham is too pleased with his situation at Bournemouth right now, although he will no doubt feel he is capable of winning a place in the XI on a consistent basis before the season finishes.
However, if he fails to do so, a summer move could be on the cards, and it will be interesting to see if he is someone who remains on Leeds’ radar.
At 26, he is about to enter his peak years, and he would fit the bill for what Farke wants, as he is capable in possession, as well as being a decent defender.
Plus, it’s worth noting that Mepham’s contract with Bournemouth expires in the summer of 2025, so he will enter the final 12 months of his deal this summer. That means the south coast outfit could look to cash in if fresh terms aren’t agreed, as his value is likely to drop if he stays beyond the summer window.
So, whilst it doesn’t seem to be happening this month, it doesn’t mean that Mepham won’t end up at Elland Road in the future, but things can change very quickly in football.
