The Football Association (FA) has shortlisted Ange Postecoglou as a candidate to succeed Gareth Southgate as the next England manager, according to the Telegraph.

The FA has reportedly been monitoring Postecoglou for several years, with technical director John McDermott closely observing his career trajectory from Australia to the Premier League.

McDermott is an admirer of Postecoglou’s coaching acumen. He is assembling an initial shortlist for the managerial vacancy and will likely have the Tottenham Hotspur boss on it.

Postecoglou is the antithesis of Southgate, who tendered his resignation after losing a second consecutive European Championship final.

Where Southgate’s football is cautious and pragmatic, his Australian counterpart is bold and daring.

The 58-year-old would be thrilled to have attacking talents such as Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka at his disposal.

The Three Lions also have a raft of front-foot defenders that can maintain his daring and infamous high lines.

The FA is considering appointing an interim manager for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September.

The FA reportedly views England Under-21 coach Lee Carsley as a strong contender for the caretaker role.

Carsley is also on the shortlist for the permanent job after winning the European Championship with the England Under-21 side last year.

The FA would prefer a permanent appointment to succeed Southgate, but they are willing to exercise patience in securing the right candidate.

In addition to Postecoglou and Carsley, other front-runners for the permanent position include Eddie Howe, Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino.
