The FA Cup, there really is nothing quite like it.
It’s perhaps the best domestic cup competition on the planet and we can’t wait to see what drama unfolds in the latter stages of 2022/23.
The third round of the FA Cup kicks off this weekend and at the same stage in 2020/21, Chorley FC – who currently play in the National League North – made quite the name for themselves.
After beating League One side Peterborough United in the second round, the semi-professional team based in Lancashire saw off then Championship outfit, Derby County.
As third round shocks go, it remains one of the biggest witnessed in football’s modern era.
Chorley’s seismic victory over Derby booked them a date with Premier League powerhouse Wolverhampton Wanderers on home soil.
It really was the ‘Magic of the Cup’ at Victory Park.
Unsurprisingly, Chorley’s FA Cup adventure came to an end at the hands of Wolves in the fourth round, although Jamie Vermiglio’s side certainly weren’t humiliated by any stretch.
Wolves only managed a 1-0 win, despite fielding a team that contained the likes of Conor Coady and Joao Moutinho.
Vitinha, who now plays with Lionel Messi at Paris Saint-Germain, scored the only goal of the game.
The Portuguese star’s strike was far from the best moment of the encounter, though. Instead, the finest snippet of action involved the lightning-quick Adama Traore, who entered the fray on 69 minutes.
Shortly after his introduction, Traore and his bulging, baby-oiled muscles were laughed at by the Chorley bench.
Why did Vermiglio and co. have a good ol’ chuckle? Well, the Wolves man tried to intimidate them following a needless foul by the touchline, an attempt which backfired in the extreme.
The footage below will forever be an iconic FA Cup moment…
Brilliant, just brilliant.
After the match, Vermiglio was keen to stress how incredibly proud he was of the team and their achievements in the FA Cup – and who can blame him, eh?
“I am proud of what we have done for our community, my kids at school will remember that their head teacher got this far in the FA Cup,” Vermiglio said. “Hopefully it can inspire some of them.
“We are approaching up to half a million [in earnings from the cup run], we have people who are isolating, and those players have given them a little bit of happiness.
“If it is 2-0 or 3-0 at half-time the game is done and people are turning their TVs off. That did not happen. I felt we were in the game. Every player was outstanding.”
