At 34, Thomas Müller is not only one of the oldest players in Germany’s squad for the European Championship, the native Bavarian is also one of the most experienced DFB stars in Julian Nagelsmann’s squad. The national coach has revealed what role Müller should play at the 2024 European Football Championship.
thomas Müller has played 128 international matches for the German national team since 2010. At least three more will be added at the 2024 European Championship at home. The attacking all-rounder has made the leap into the German EURO squad.
According to national coach Julian Nagelsmann, Müller will not only play a key role on the pitch at the tournament: „He is a link to the fans, the media and the team. He is of course an extension of the coaching team. He has an eye for the big picture. He has sent me very funny messages. Thomas connects many protagonists and is a link in addition to his sporting qualities. I’m looking forward to him,“ he explained on Thursday at the squad announcement in Berlin.
With players such as Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz, Nagelsmann has many options in attacking midfield. The 36-year-old makes no secret of the fact that Müller will have to make do with a wildcard role at the European Championships: „He’s more likely to come off the bench. He doesn’t need much time to get going, he always has actions and moments that are special in the sixteen. The term „typical Müller goal“ is no coincidence.
