West Ham have offered James Collins a club ambassador role, Football Insider can reveal.

The popular former Hammers defender, 36, revealed in a BBC interview last week he was disappointed at the manner of his exit from the London Stadium in the summer of 2018.

A West Ham source has told Football Insider the club hierarchy are now working to smooth relations with Collins by inviting him to the VIP enclosure and offering the opportunity to go on the pitch at half-time to say a proper goodbye to supporters.

West Ham are also eager to make Collins an ambassador before matches to reflect his status as an Irons idol.

The source explained that the former Wales international has not yet accepted the offer, as he weighs up his options.

Collins played for nearly 10 years for West Ham over two spells, with his time coming to an end when the club opted not to extend his contract at the end of 2017-18 season.

He subsequently spent a short time at Aston Villa that was ended by injury before joining Ipswich Town on a half-season deal in January of this year.

Collins is now without a club as he winds up a glittering career that included 214 appearances for the Hammers, 108 for Villa and 57 for hometown club Cardiff City.

He also made 50 appearances for Wales and was a key member of their side that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016.
