Out of favour full-back Niall Huggins looks set for an exit from the Black Cats to link up with a familiar face
Wycombe Wanderers are in negotiations to land the services of Sunderland full-back Niall Huggins on loan, sources have exclusively informed Football League World.
The Black Cats have well and truly overhauled their squad upon their return to the Premier League this summer, and that has left many of the players that were with them in the Championship in the cold.
Some have been forgotten about altogether and are very much no longer in Regis Le Bris' plans, and Wycombe head coach Mike Dodds - a former staff member and caretaker manager of the Wearside outfit - is looking to take advantage of that.
FLW has been told that Wycombe and Dodds are looking to close a deal to take Niall Huggins from the Stadium of Light to Adams Park on a temporary basis.
12 new faces have arrived at the Chairboys this summer, but after six matches they are yet to win a match, with just two points picked up as they sit in the relegation zone.
One area they haven't bolstered is at right-back, with both Jack Grimmer and Fin Back being options in that position for Dodds, but he's now looking to bring Huggins in for extra competition.
The 24-year-old Welshman has been at Sunderland for the last four years since his move from Leeds, meaning his time there overlaps with Dodds' time there as a coach, under-21's manager and also caretaker boss of the first-team.
Whilst Dodds was able to develop and progess in the North East though, it hasn't been the case for Huggins, who has appeared just 29 times for Sunderland in four years with the club, owing to a multitude of injuries.
Having been out of action with knee issues since December 2024, Huggins returned to action in an EFL Cup clash with Huddersfield Town last week, and with less than a year remaining on his contract, Sunderland are ready to let him spend some time out on loan - Wycombe are aiming to be the recipients of that decision.
