The Hatters have been adapting to League One life following their back-to-back relegations from the Premier League to the third tier of English football, and it’s not gone all plain sailing for head coach Matt Bloomfield, who has seen his side lose twice already from their first six matches.

10 new faces have arrived at Kenilworth Road this summer, which include a return for Kal Naismith, and Town aren’t finished there as they look to raid a League One rival for one of their stars.

FLW has been told that Luton have made their move for Barnsley midfielder Adam Phillips ahead of Monday’s 7pm transfer deadline.

Bloomfield has added to most positions in his squad this summer, but an attacking midfielder is something that he’s been lacking.

And with Tahith Chong having now departed for Sheffield United, it has left a gap for Town to fill - and the solution could be Phillips, with an offer on the table for his services, as per FLW’s sources.

27-year-old Phillips has been at Barnsley since 2022, joining the Tykes from Burnley after previous loan stints at both Morecambe and Accrington Stanley.

Phillips has shone for the South Yorkshire outfit in League One in the last three full seasons and has proved to be a constant scoring threat in the middle of the park.

He netted eight league goals and nine assists in his debut season at Oakwell, before bettering that in 2023-24 with a tally of 11 goals and six assists.

Keeping up his fine third tier form, Phillips found the back of the net nine times last season in League One, providing seven further goals for his team-mates, and he’s been part of a Barnsley side that so far in 2025-26 that have won four of their first six matches and currently sit above Luton in fourth spot.

Phillips has less than one year remaining on his Barnsley contract, albeit there is a club option that if triggered means he is on the books until 2027, so Luton will need to offer an attractive package to convince their divisional rivals to part ways with one of their key players.
