John Textor is reportedly part of a group looking into ending Chansiri's reign of terror at Hillsborough

A fresh twist has emerged in Sheffield Wednesday's situation, with former Crystal Palace stakeholder John Textor believed to be part of a group of businessmen that are lining up a takeover of the South Yorkshire outfit.

The Owls are currently a club in crisis, with transfer restrictions in place at Hillsborough and wages are continued to be not paid to players and staff alike.

A takeover of the club from maligned Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri has not materialised, but a day after it emerged that Textor had followed Sheffield Wednesday on Instagram, a report from journalist Alan Nixon claimed that the American is part of a bigger group that is looking to take control of the stricken club.

As per Nixon's report, some Owls players have been told a takeover is close in a bid to try and not see them rip up their current contracts due to unpaid wages, with Textor believed to be part of the group vying for the Yorkshire club.

And speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes that should Textor be part of the consortium that takes over the club in the future, he would be a good fit at Hillsborough based on what has happened at Palace during his years in south London.

"I think anybody would be a good replacement for Dejphon Chansiri," Goodman told FLW.

"John Textor has had success with Crystal Palace, there's no doubt about that.

"There's debate as to how hands-on or not he was in the day-to-day running of the club, but certainly his investment helped the club, and I think Sheffield Wednesday is a fantastic club for the right person to buy and invest in.

"It's a massive club with a massive fanbase, a great history, and it needs a bit of TLC from somebody that can afford to run it properly, and the current owner isn't that man."

John Textor and co need to move quick - Sheffield Wednesday are in a state of crisis

With the financial situation at Hillsborough continuing to be severely bleak, a sale needs to happen as soon as possible in order to bring fresh cash into the club.

Dejphon Chansiri has evidently ran out of money to fund Wednesday, but there appears to be a lack of willing buyers to take the club off his hands, which presents a very short-term problem.

Given the fact he's just sold his 43 per cent stake in Crystal Palace for around £190 million, John Textor definitely has money, although there will be concerns over his ownership of French giants Lyon, who have been in financial difficulties and survived relegation to Ligue 2 via an appeal, after they were banished to the second tier due to the state of their cash issues.

Beggers can't be choosers though, especially when it comes to Sheffield Wednesday's current plight, and given he's been part of a successful Crystal Palace team behind the scenes for a number of years, there's reasons to be positive if Textor ends up being part of a takeover consortium.
