Barry Bannan has praised the Sheffield Wednesday fans as they sold out their allocation for the trip to Leicester City on Sunday.
Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed they have sold out their away allocation for their trip to Leicester City this weekend.
The Owls begin their Championship campaign at the King Power Stadium on Sunday despite a summer of turmoil which has threatened the long-term future of the club.
Owner Dejphon Chansiri has failed to pay the wages on time for the past few months, which has brought sanctions from the EFL, whilst several players have taken the chance to leave on a free, with Josh Windass among them.
The situation remains very bleak for Wednesday, and the first-team squad refused to play a recent friendly against Burnley due to problems at the club.
So, the immediate concern for the Yorkshire outfit is to find a buyer for Chansiri, and all connected to the club will be hoping for progress to be made on the front in the background.
In the meantime, Henrik Pedersen, who has been named as Danny Rohl's successor, is trying to prepare the group for their Championship opener, which is a tough test against recently relegated Leicester City.
Of course, Wednesday are huge outsiders for the game given their predicament, but the club announced on their official site that they had sold all 3,287 tickets for the trip.
That news prompted a response from club captain Barry Bannan, with the midfielder taking to his Instagram story to react to the update with the applause emoji as he thanked the fans for their support.
As mentioned, the situation at Wednesday means that few will expect Pedersen’s side to get a result on Sunday, and it could be a case of damage limitation.
But, with the game broadcast on TV, the supporters will no doubt have protests planned as they try to highlight exactly what Chansiri has done to the club with his mismanagement over the years.
As well as that, it highlights what awaits for a potential new owner, as the support is there, and the fact they can sell out an away game in these circumstances shows that they won’t give up on their club.
Of course, the players will also appreciate it, as reflected by Bannan’s post, and the away end will certainly back those out on the pitch at Leicester, and that support will be needed as it's going to be a real struggle.
Wednesday finished 12th last season but are likely to struggle considerably this time around with an inexperienced coach in charge of a threadbare squad amid myriad crises off the pitch.
But, if one thing is for certain, it's that the loyal support from Wednesdayites, both home and away, will be unwavering as ever, and the Owls are going to need the club's fans to be a real 12th man all year long, starting with this weekend's daunting trip to newly-relegated Leicester.
