Emil Audero could start in goal for Inter Milan against Empoli even if Yann Sommer returns to fitness.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper anticipate that Audero could get his second league start of the season.

So far this season, Audero has made three appearances for Inter.

The Sampdoria-owned keeper made his debut for the Nerazzurri in a 3-3 draw against Benfica in the Champions League.

Then, Audero was also in goal against Bologna in a Coppa Italia round of sixteen tie.

Most recently, Audero started against Lecce in a Serie A match. That was his first league start for Inter.

First-choice keeper Sommer had missed out on that match due to flu-like symptoms.

Emil Audero Could Start For Inter Vs Empoli Even If Sommer Is Fit

And Audero may not have to wait long to get his second ever league start for Inter.

Former Bayern Munich keeper Sommer is a major doubt for the Nerazzurri’s first match back from the international break.

Inter host Empoli in Serie A next week.

And Sommer is currently recovering from an ankle sprain. The 35-year-old picked up the injury during an international friendly with Switzerland against Denmark.

Sommer’s injury is not overly serious.

Therefore, the Inter keeper should be able to get back to fitness within the next week or so.

Accordingly, Tuttosport note, there would be a decent chance of Sommer being ready for the match against Empoli.

On the other hand, though, it is not as though Sommer will rush back to the pitch.

Given Inter’s margin at the top of the Serie A table, there is not exactly tremendous pressure for the Swiss to play if there is any risk of reinjury or of his not being at his best.

Therefore, Tuttosport anticipate, there is still every chance that Audero could get the start.
