Former England winger Stewart Downing has announced his retirement at the age of 37.

“After some time to relax and reflect with my family over the summer, I have decided the time has come to retire from playing professional football,” he said in a statement, before thanking his family and all his former clubs.

Downing began his career at Middlesbrough, breaking through as a teenager and winning the League Cup before moving to Aston Villa in 2009 and Liverpool in 2011.

The winger spent two years at Anfield, winning the League Cup again, before moving on to West Ham and returning to Middlesbrough before ending his career with Blackburn Rovers.

“I look back on the 35 times that I played for England with immense pride,” Downing added. “I feel very lucky and fortunate to have had the career I have had.”
