Real Madrid are the heavy favourites to reclaim their crown, even if their long pursuit of Kylian Mbappé didn’t pay off. Their rivals will be hoping another year in the legs might have an adverse effect on Karim Benzema and Luka Modrić but the €100m arrival of Aurélien Tchouaméni suggests the club already have a new-look midfield in mind.

The most likely challengers, Barcelona, have certainly had an interesting summer. The huge capture of Robert Lewandowski is a big statement but not the only arrival, with Raphinha there to provide him, Serie A winner Franck Kessié bolstering midfield, and Jules Koundé coming in to shore up a leaky defence. Now they just need to find a way to register them all.

2021 champions Atlético Madrid will always be competitive, and Nahuel Molina’s move from Udinese solves a problem position at right-back, while not being able to shift Álvaro Morata could end up being a surprising boost for Diego Simeone.
