Everton forward Nicoline Sørensen has announced her intention to retire from professional football at the end of the year.

WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Blue Girls this evening.

It has been reported that Sørensen is considering exploring career options away from the professional game. She is scheduled to retire when the Barclays Women’s Super League enters the Christmas break.

Sørensen joined Everton from Brondby IF in summer 2020. She has gone on to make 46 appearances for the Merseyside club in the Barclays Women’s Super League in which she has scored four goals. Sørensen spent some of her Everton career sidelined with an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury but she has successfully made her comeback and played an important role in the team.

Speaking after this evening’s announcement, Alan McTavish, CEO of Everton Women said “Nicoline has been a key part of our squad over the past three years and signed a new one-year deal in the summer.

“However, she recently informed us of her plans to retire from professional football and after careful consideration, we have reluctantly taken the decision to release her from her contract.

“She will remain part of the Women’s Senior Team squad until our game with Manchester City on 17 December.

“Whatever Nicoline’s next steps are, on behalf of everyone at Everton, I would like to wish her all the very best for the future.”

Sørensen featured for Everton in their 2-2 draw with Bristol City at Walton Hall Park this afternoon. Her expected retirement was announced just a couple of hours after that match.
