Marcel Brands' authority at Everton has been "rolled back", according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

What did Brown say about Brands' authority at Everton?

Brands joined Everton back in May 2018, and is the club's director of football. His role is to ensure that the Toffees get their player recruitment spot on, but Brown believes that Everton manager Rafael Benitez now has the power to pick the players that he wants without consulting Brands, which could be undermining the Dutchman's authority.

Speaking about Brands' current situation to GIVEMESPORT, Brown said: “Brands is the main man at Everton, we’re led to believe. Moshiri loves him, he was promoted, he’s basically been put in charge of the future strategy of the club. And yet, he’s not the man ultimately picking the manager. And he doesn’t seem to be the man saying: ‘you must buy this player, don’t buy that one.’

“So, he’s got a certain level of authority, and then it’s rolled back. Whether he’s happy with that forever remains to be seen. But I do think at the moment, Brands is in a setup where he knows the manager can go to the owner and say: ‘I want this player’, and the owner will probably give it to him, whether Brands thinks it’s a good idea or not.”

Who has Brands brought to Everton?

Brands made a statement of intent in his first transfer window at Goodison Park, bringing in Lucas Digne and Yerry Mina from Barcelona, while also giving approval for Everton to add Brazilian forward Richarlison to their ranks. All three are still part of the club's first-team.

He has continued to make ambitious moves in the transfer market ever since, as last year he prised James Rodriguez away from Real Madrid, and convinced Allan to switch Naples for Merseyside.
