Everton have been charged with an alleged breach of the Premier League’s Profitability & Sustainability rules, better known as Financial Fair Play (FFP).

According to The Telegraph and The Guardian, the incidents are said to have come within the financial period that ended with the 2021/22 season, and have been brought about after a 10-month investigation.

The inquiry is said to have started after Burnley and Leeds wrote to the league in May questioning whether the Merseyside club had broken FFP after they recorded losses of £371.8m over a three year span.

From here, Everton’s case will be heard by an independent commission, as confirmed by the Premier League’s statement on the situation.

“The proceedings before the Commission will, in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82, be confidential and heard in private,” read the statement.

“Under Premier League Rule W.82.2, the Commission’s final award will be published on the Premier League’s website. The League will be making no further comment until that time.”

While there have been no reports suggesting how Everton could be punished if found guilty, clubs who breach the Premier League’s FFP rules can reportedly face fines or even point deductions.
