The European Court of Justice has ruled in favour of the breakaway clubs allowing them to potentially re-form the European Super League.

Back in April 2021, 12 of Europe’s biggest sides – including Barcelona, Real Madrid and six from the Premier League – attempted to break away from their domestic competitions and form their own European Super League.

Those plans collapsed within days of the announcement but the two Spanish giants have maintained an interest in creating the European Super League, first going through the Madrid courts and eventually to the ECJ in Luxembourg.

And on Thursday the ECJ ruled in favour of those teams saying that UEFA and FIFA had maintained a monopoly over football governance and that their current rules are “contrary to competition law and the provision of services”.

This ruling potentially paves the way for a new Super League although clubs may well be wary of returning to that path following intense fan reaction two and a half years ago.
