Vincenzo Montella’s Turkey suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Portugal including a comical own goal, but Rafael Leao will be suspended for repeated simulation.

Both sides had won their opening fixtures in Group F, so the Portuguese book their spot in the Round of 16, while Turkey must avoid defeat with Czechia.

Montella made a few changes to his starting XI, some forced by fitness levels, leaving Juventus talent Kenan Yildiz and Real Madrid teen Arda Guler on the bench.

Bernardo Silva opened the scoring at the end of a well-worked move, found in acres of space to sweep home from 10 yards on the Nuno Mendes pull-back from the left.

The second goal was one of the most bizarre ever seen in any major tournament. Joao Cancelo won it back in midfield and misplaced the pass for Cristiano Ronaldo, but while the two teammates were insulting each other for the mistake, defender Samet Akaydin didn’t realise his goalkeeper had wandered off the line and put a back-pass into his own net.

Milan star Rafael Leao was booked for simulation in the first match and again in the second, so he’ll be suspended for the final group game against Georgia.

The third goal was a walk in the park, as Cristiano Ronaldo sprung the offside trap following Roma defender Zeki Celik’s stumble and with uncharacteristic generosity rolled it across for Bruno Fernandes to tap into an empty net.
