Every group stage fixture at EURO 2024 has now officially been completed after Georgia rose to a shock 2-0 victory over Portugal, largely thanks to Napoli‘s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, while Inter‘s Hakan Calhanoglu helped Türkiye to a 2-1 win over Czechia.
Kvaratskhelia needed less than two minutes to grab Georgia’s first of the night, pouncing on a smart counter-attack launched by the competition’s leading goalscorer Georges Mikautadze. The Georgian lead was doubled when Mikautadze scored from the penalty spot midway through the second half.
Fiorentina‘s Antonin Barak became the first talking point in Czechia vs Türkiye after hw was sent off for two yellow cards within the opening 20 minutes. Inter’s Calhanoglu opened the scoring six minutes after the re-start, only for West Ham’s Tomas Soucek to draw the 10-men of Czechia level 15 minutes later. Cenk Tosun restored the Turkish lead four minutes into injury time.
The conclusion of group stage matches means that the line-up for the competition’s round of 16 is now officially set.
Italy will play Switzerland at Olympiastadion on Saturday evening, kicking off at 17.00 BST.
Kvaratskhelia 2′, Mikautadze 57′.
Calhanoglu (T) 51′, Soucek (C) 66′.
