Sunday was the final matchday of Group C in Euro 2022 with Sweden and the Netherlands hoping to qualify for the quarter-final as they face Portugal and Switzerland respectively.
Here’s how it’s went….
Scorers: Angeldal 21′, 45′, Costa (OG) 45’+7, Asllani (P) 54′, Blackstenius 90’+1
Sweden only needed a point to ensure qualification and their lively start put Portugal under early pressure. Patricia Morais was called into action early on to deny Johanna Rytting before the Portuguese keeper gifted Sweden an opener.
Jonna Andersson’s wicked corner was played right on top of Morais who could only punch the ball as far as her own penalty spot. Lying in wait was Filippa Angeldal who adjusted her body quickly to slot home.
Portugal’s build-up play remained fast a fluid throughout but were unable to create any clear-cut opportunities.
The Swedish, however, grew into the game and taking advantage of set piece opportunities made Portugal pay.
Angeldal doubled the lead, and her personal tally, just before half-time following a short-corner routine and, deep into stoppage time another Andersson corner caused havoc. Amanda Ilestedt was on hand to make it three via a Carole Costa deflection.
The second half was one-way traffic with Sweden piling pressure on Portugal, as Kosovare Asllani scored a fourth from the penalty spot.
Despite Portugal’s efforts, Sweden would find a fifth as the clock tipped into stoppage time. Stina Blackstenius, having been denied by the offside flag earlier in the half, got off the mark and provided extra polish to the qualification.
Scorers: Reuteler 53′, Leuchter 84′, 90’+5, Pelova 89′; Crnogorcevic (OG) 48′
With only a point needed to qualify the Netherlands started in a cagey fashion against the Swiss at Bramall Lane.
Despite being one of the favourites it was Swizterland who tested first, Sandy Maendly’s effort tipped over the bar by a full extended Daphne van Domselaar.
Gaëlle Thalmann had an outstanding game in the Swiss goal, thwarting the Dutch efforts all game only to be beaten by an own-goal.
A looping corner to the back post was headed back across by Stephanie van der Gragt and, under no pressure Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic got her defensive header all wrong, deflecting into the Swiss net.
The lead, however, didn’t last long as Geraldine Reuteler equalised. Having started the move Reuteler played in Ramona Bachmann only to receive the ball back and cooly finish from close range.
Bachmann and Riola Xhemaili were both denied by van Domselaar before Romee Leuchter gave the Netherlands the lead.
Misreading a cross, the Swiss goalkeeper tried to claim but go nowhere near, allowing Leuchter’s looping header to bounce into an empty net.
With the Swiss spirits broken, the floodgates followed. Pelova added a third from a free-kick routine before Leuchter doubled her tally to put the game to bed.
