Sweden and Belgium went toe-to-toe for a spot in the women’s Euro 2022 semi-finals on Friday afternoon at the Leigh Sports Village.
Here’s how it’s went
Scorers: Sembrant 90+2′
Sweden dominated much of the first half, with Belgium turning to goalkeeper Nicky Evrard for salvation on multiple occasions.
Fresh off her brace against Portugal last time out, Filippa Angeldahl was the first to test the Belgian shot-stopper with a stunning effort from range.
Angeldahl would have another opportunity not five minutes later but, with the goal at her mercy, couldn’t get her body shape right a fired high over the bar.
Stina Blackstenius was a constant threat and the 26-year-old thought she’d put Sweden ahead only for the goal to be chalked off for a marginal offside.
Sweden’s dominance continued in the second period but still couldn’t find a way past Evrard and the resolute Belgian defence.
From a free-kick, Blackstenius was alive to a second phase but her point-blank header was expertly stopped once again by the Genk goalkeeper.
The goal would come though as Belgian hearts were broken in the final minute. Corners, which have been such a potent weapon for Sweden throughout the tournament, finally paid off.
The ball fell to Nathalie Björn at the back post but her effort was saved once again by Evrard. However, the Belgian goalkeeper couldn’t do anything when the rebound was slammed home from five yards out by centre-back Linda Sembrant, to send Sweden to the semi-finals.
