Sweden had been tied with Switzerland 1-1 before the Everton midfielder came on and completely changed the game.

Just before the 70th minute mark, the young Swede was introduced to the match alongside fellow substitute Johanna Rytting Kaneryd. The two youngsters made an immediate impact and helped nudge their side back into the lead to clinch all three points at the end of the night.

Bennison received the ball at the edge of the box and without a second of hesitation, she twisted her body and rifled her shot into the back of the net.

“The 19-year-old with a bit of magic!” Former England international Anita Asante wrote via UEFA.com. “This is what you need. She’s come into the game and made an impact. What a strike that is — such difficult technique. She’s bent her body to get around the ball.”

This year is Bennison’s first appearance at the European Championship and it took just two appearances from off the bench to make her mark.

After playing for FC Rosengard for three years, the young playmaker made her first ever move away from her home country. She signed for Everton in 2021 for a “substantial six-figure sum” and enjoyed her first season in the Women’s Super League.

Thanks to Bennison’s goal and the previous opener from Fridolina Rolfo, Sweden leapfrog to the top of Group C with one game left to play. Their final match of the groups stages will see them take on Portugal n Sunday, July 17th.

Sweden have never not qualified from the group stages of a European Championship. They won their first and only title back in 1984 and have since come close to once again claiming the crown, but their best result in recent years was a silver medal finish in 2001.

At Euro 2013, the Swedes reached the semi-finals of their home tournament, where they were eliminated by eight-time title winners Germany. In 2017, they failed to make it beyond the quarter-finals after suffering a defeat to eventual champions the Netherlands.
