“It’s not true — he has no release clause for Real Madrid or any other team. It’s not true. What else can I say?”
That was Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s response when he was asked in a recent press conference whether Erling Haaland has a release clause in his contract, as had been previously reported in Spain.
But a new report from The Athletic on Tuesday claims that Haaland’s City contract does in fact contain a release clause worth €200m which kicks in in 2024, when he will be two years into his five year deal at the Etihad Stadium.
There are a couple of caveats, however. The main one is that the release clause would only apply to clubs outside England, meaning Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich could swoop for Haaland but a move to one City’s Premier League rivals would be almost impossible.
And any buying club would also be forced to pay additional bonuses and agents fees on top of the €200m transfer fee, not to mention the striker’s salary. Haaland reportedly earns £375,000-per-week at City and that figure would likely increase were he to move to another club, especially if he keeps up his current strike rate.
The 22-year-old has so far scored 20 goals in 13 appearances since joining City from Borussia Dortmund and is believed to be very happy at his new club and well settled in Manchester.
But speculation about a move to another club in Europe is unlikely to ever go away, especially now the apparent cost to sign him has been made public.
